Koalas have a band of cartilage across their lower backs and Jordan has propped himself n this small stick so sit with such seeming ease on the branch.
The other marsupial with this same shield of cartilage in this spot is their closest cousin, the wombat.
Thank you for the awesome comments and questions on my photos.
@30pics4jackiesdiamond good question :) all koalas have white bottoms that merge into the grey by speckling and for some it's quite stark like Jordan who is so dark, while for others it's a much more muted speckling :)
That superior look as he surveys the land around him ! However well padded I would not like to be supported by that sharp looking twig ! - Isn't nature wonderful !
@brigette They have to come to the ground much of the time now to move between trees. Once upon a time there were huge old growth forests and they could stay safely in the treetops all the day long .... (I could write a book hahaha)
On the ground they are most vulnerable sadly. They don't have any interest in saying hi to me that's for sure, but they tolerate me constantly coming along and pointing the black thing at them with quite a bit of grace, or at least with some fab haughty expressions :)
