water repellent

Forms of nature - you can clearly see that after more than 24 of nearly solid rain, the coat of Angel is damp but the water beads and rolls off.
That is why the curl in a ball - to keep the water out of their face and ears. The saying might need to be changed to 'like water off a koalas back' I think :)
Oh that poor soggy Angel! It is so amazing how nature looks after it's own. Lovely shot and details.

How interesting. Looking at her coat you wouldn't say that she's been out in the rain for 24 hours.

Fascinating ...

So glad to hear about the continuing rains for you!

So interesting. Thankful for your rain.

Interesting. Does this mean that they have a lot of oil in their fur that coats the hairs and keeps the water from penetrating?

Cool shot and I love the textures.

@gardencat now that is a very good question! I can't answer for certain, I've always understood it to be the dense nature of the coat, but with their diet high in eucalyptus oil it does have me wondering if oil is a factor also ... mmmmm :)

I know you say that they’re impervious to rain but Angel's coat does look awfully soggy!

So wet - her coat works in the same way as sheep I assume !

@beryl This is what I was wondering because sheep, I think, have lanolin in/on their fur which is what seems to protect them from getting too soggy. ( And which has a very distinctive odour!)

@vignouse this is her coat after at least 12 inches of rain, the top is wet, but nearly all the water beads and runs off :)

I'm sure after it being dry for so long a slight dampening of the coat probably feels good!

I wonder if Koalas like the rain it must feel quite refreshing

So glad you have had rain. It has poured here the last two days and we have had almost 180 mm rain during that time. More to come I believe.

It is amazing how the plants have sprung back into life since the rain. Our strawberry guava has fruit on it at last and I hope the ringtail possums arrive soon to eat the fruit.
