No.2 in my project to photograph the Cathar castles. I think these castles really need to be seen in the context of their surroundings, and since Aguilar isn't that high, Jasper and I climbed the hill opposite to take this pic. Liked the mood, can't you just see some old knights (Sir Laurence Oliver, Orlando Bloom, maybe John Cleese) trotting through that mist on their chargers.
Aguilar is a true Cathar castle, besieged and taken by the Pope's crusaders in 1210, then retaken by the Cathars 30 years later. In the 14th Century it was one of the five 'sons of Carcassonne' (the others were Queribus, Peyrepertuse, Termes and Puilaurens) that protected what was then the southern border of France.
