100 links = a chain by leggzy

100 links = a chain

1 chain = 66 feet, or 22 yards, or 100 links, or 4 rods. There are 10 chains in a furlong & 80 chains in 1 mile. 1 chain is also the length of a cricket pitch....who knew! lol

This is an old surveyors chain used to measure distances of land. I've heard the reference to links, chains, rods, perches, etc when looking at old family history stuff relating to land grants etc, but I never quite understood it, and had never seen a chain/links before....until I seen this one at the Ulster Folk museum, in Holywood Northern Ireland. I now understand the system better :) (just noticed that my camera is reflected in the background...lol)

Feeling like it is taking me forever to catch up on my project....just too many photo to sort through & then trying to decide which to choose for each day! I guess I will get there eventually :)
An interesting post and a cool capture. Like the way the light highlights the texture of the rope, and yeah, you can see your camera. It looks massive :)
