Winter swans by ljmanning

Winter swans

Trumpeter swans on the icy river. Trumpeters are surprisingly big birds, with wing spans of 185 to 250 cm (6 ft 2 in to 8 ft 2 in). They are so elegant in the water but look utterly ridiculous walking on the ice.
They are lovely.

lol. I can just imagine. We have a couple of them living on the river near where I live. I photograph them sometimes but have never seen them walk on either land or ice. Nice shot.

On land they look odd but to me also intimidating . Having seen an occasional irate Canada goose, I wouldn’t want to annoy these guys, if they were in my vicinity.

@gardencat Having once been trapped on top of a picnic table for more than an hour by an angry swan, I can vouch for this. They whack you with those wing joints and it’s painful!
