The Steam Punk exhibition in Oamaru, NZ has just opened. Not here but in another building. I caught this entrepeneur with his outfit in an old building in the historic area of Oamaru.
The Journal has brought me from Matlock to Leeds, Barnsley and Wakefield where Mum says, ". I’ll pass over the frightful blackness of it all; men, women, children and buildings, all black and thriving under it! Yes, we’ve seen the Midlands at their worst" From there she went to York and I was lost in wonderment at York Minster! I never really knew about it but on research for various names I was transfixed with the history of the building and its treasures. Mum writes that the stained glass windows has an area of 3/4 acre, a statement I believe but can't prove in research. She couldn't get in at the YWCA so had to go to the 'Station Hotel" which I have found is now called "The Royal York Hotel" and has over 100 bedrooms. She had to pay more than the YW but revelled in: " We have a reading lamp and a wonderful hot bath, a comfy bed, three towels each and a new cake of soap each day, so can’t complain!" Breakfast was a huge 4 shillings and 'didn't include fruit' which horrified her!
I feel like I'm travelling round with your mum! My son went to university in Leeds and lived there for nine years... yes, the Midlands is certainly bleak and dour at times. This man has got serious attitude!
He looks so cool Maggie! Nice shot! Good goin with the diary, interesting how she calls Leeds et al, Midlands :) they would not like that a lot:) Don't know if you follow @ if1 Ian, he lives in York and documents the history and buildings, fascinating stuff, have a look.
Cool shot- very strange! I don't know what Steam Punk is, but it sure looks interesting! Great job with the diary- fun to see what your mom had to say about things such as her lodging and the food.
