Irrigation1 by maggiemae

Irrigation1

In Canterbury there are these snaky monsters that creep over the fields watering the crops. They move inch by inch over the fences as can be seen here. The land has been taken over for dairy farming and huge herds of cows are seen everywhere. They need a lot to eat so crops have been planted for them and the watering is vital

Three good things;
1. We got our car washed by this one as we parked alongside for the photo.
2. My capable man managed to start the car we were transporting after its battery died.
3. My capable man left his computer satchel behind in the car that was to be whisked off to Auckland by train. He remembered fortunately and it was retrieved!
These are so very cool!!

That was a relief .......lots of grass here maggimae, the irrigation must be working well , I have heard that they have drought conditions around that part of the island. I was told by farmer friends who farm in Dunsandal that you are allowed to irrigate with only the water you are licensed to do? They are massive machines! Love your perspective here! A fave for me!

they are aliens, adulterating our landscapes so that we will acclimatize to them slowly and then they eat us live! that's my story. and good for car washing, too! very nice processing!

Fav. Love how the spraying water changes the whole look to the sunny scene below. Excellent composition and balance.

@happypat This is just south of Dunsandal, Pat. They are about to declare a drought - worst for 10 years. I don't know where they get all the water to do all this - the rivers appear to be all dried up!

@summerfield Funny that! Everyone accepts these monsters but protests about wind turbines!
January 16th, 2015
What a great pov and composition - you have captured this creeping monster in the act. And I too hate seeing the dairy industry drinking up the land - give me a paddock full of lamb chops any day. Fav.

Great shot! I saw in the local news recently that a farm at Tarras has built ramps so one of these can travel up and over a farm house that was in the way! Farm worker said the only downside is that he has to mow his lawns more often now.....
January 16th, 2015
@kiwisnapper Thats right - these monsters climb fences, go over hedges and farmhouses - incredible!
January 16th, 2015
@kiwisnapper Ha often wonder how they get over the obstacles .. Great shot Maggie they are amazing contraptions... too hilly to have this set up on our farm... Huge farms around the Dunsandal area...
January 16th, 2015
@kiwisnapper It says "Page not found" Ashley!
January 16th, 2015
@maggiemae Weird, works for me! If you google 'ODT pivot alley' it should be the first result.
January 16th, 2015
Those big irrigation systems are so interesting, amazing how big they are.. I love the way you processed this shot.
January 16th, 2015
@kiwisnapper Rightio! Done that - its a very good picture of it!
January 16th, 2015
It's amazing that it goes over everything.. Great pov of this beast. Lots of watering going on for a drought area. Capable men who do cars are high on my list! Even better if they fix computers.
January 16th, 2015
What monstrosity !! but I guess a necessity if the dairy herds and farms are to survive ! and after all they are not a permanent fixture but a mobile irrigation system A great pov and capture Maggiemae
January 16th, 2015
@kiwisnapper Thanks for that Ashley, might have known it would of been Johns Perriam ( of Shrek fame)...

The farmers we know are on the Dunsandal Rd at Leeston maggiemae. You turn right at the Dunsandal cross roads as younare coming from Christchurch. Funny coincidence I have been 'talking' to Gaye on FB this morning the first time for ages. I remember they have massive poplar type trees around the edges of the fields.

Awesome shot

@kiwisnapper Very interesting Ashley thank you.

It's amazing how big they are. Incredible!
January 16th, 2015
Nice shot. I am really enjoying your editing.
January 16th, 2015
Watching these on the prairies I had always thought that they were sentient machines. I like how your processed this
January 16th, 2015
Lovely shot and Edit Maggie...Fav
January 16th, 2015
Love your processing Maggie. Fav
January 16th, 2015
Unusual processing for you Maggiemae but it's perfect for this image of these awful alien machines. Fav!
January 16th, 2015
Oooh, very HDR. I'm not sure I like the processing but I do like the composition.
January 16th, 2015
Brilliant capture and processing, clever design of the traveling spray
January 16th, 2015
Great capture of this huge machine! I hope you get rain soon in the drought area.
January 16th, 2015
That's quite the complicated looking machine! Nice processing!
January 16th, 2015
I love this, Maggie! It's like you can see the planes of the water. Very cool, and love the green and golden colors.
January 17th, 2015
Lovely shot. Great layers and composition. a fav
January 17th, 2015
Ha...we have those on this side of the pond also. Great shot..nice close up and pov. WOnderful colors. FAv

The clarity of the irrigation monster is super. I thought that there is a water shortage and irrigation is restricted. Nice way to wash the car before it reaches the land. Did your man use your electric bike to start the car?
January 17th, 2015
@yaorenliu ha ha, Yao! At first I had to tow the car behind the truck we had with us but John remembered that the car was automatic and could not be jump started. So we had to find some jumper leads Good place to find these in an historic aircraft place!
January 17th, 2015
Great photo and processing, Maggiemae. Love your sense of humor, a free carwash. Sounds like all went ok in the end. FAV
January 17th, 2015
Neat shot
January 17th, 2015
It really does look like a monster - well captured.
January 17th, 2015
Interesting lines in this.
January 18th, 2015
Love this. Nice liNed and love the processing.

Nice shot, Maggie. Interesting equipment. It's cool how they move on their own. The grass looks so lush and green. I'm glad that your "capable man" remembered his computer satchel - and that he got the car started. There's nothing wrong with a free car wash!
January 18th, 2015
I love these monsters but have never gotten a shot that I like enough to post. I love this one and the processing..
January 19th, 2015
@lesip Thanks Leslie for the fav! I had to choose my POV for this shot and there were other irrigators but they didn't have water coming out!
January 19th, 2015
Lee
Good shot Maggie, although the HDR processing has left halos.
January 19th, 2015
@gamelee Could you point out what you mean, Lee? I am keen to learn!
January 20th, 2015
Lee
If you don't mind, may i point you to this tutorial. It will explain far better than I can. http://shutterstoppers.com/remove-halos-hdr-photographs/
January 20th, 2015
@gamelee Thank you Lee - I now see what you mean! I was looking for something circular like you see on top of angels! I don't have photoshop but will look out for that particular effect and avoid it!
January 20th, 2015
Farm equipment is so interesting to me. There are some of these sprinklers at a farm on the way to son #1's home. Might have to stop and get a shot of them now that I've been inspired by your shot!
