Here is a thought re your dof practice...this one almost works with the glass on right front clearly the one you wanted to be the star of the show. I think maybe an F 5.6 would have separated it even better. I think you are choosing too wide an aperture especially when you use 1.8 to be able to get a nice sharp focus on what is most important. You might play with setting yourself up on a tripod and getting clear in your mind what you want sharp...then shoot at f 1.8 all the way up to f 8 and then compare results
