I failed last night to get the star effect specified in the get pushed challenge given me yesterday by @evahenriette "... to take night time photography where you include at least one street lamp and get the star effect."
Last night I couldn't resist walking down to the corner of 11th and Poyntz (1/2 block over and 1 block to the intersection at the corner of the park) and giving it a go to see what my little camera could get. The closest I came to "star effect" was on a shot I accidentally deleted when I got home. Ah well, I liked this one better anyway. It's grainy and amateur, but I like the reflections I was getting from the metal (electrical box?) I was setting the camera on to take pictures with 10 second delay.
I experimented with various settings -- both automatic and semi-automatic (adjustments possible in various elements) and aiming in different directions etc. This is cropped some from the original which shows two more signal lights visible above and to the left of the one seen here.
I'll give it another go and see if I can get the street lamp to show me a star. If you view this large you can see the fire trucks better, but it's even more grainy looking so you may or may not be impressed by our fine equipment.
@evahenriette As you can see I failed at the star effect, but I did jump right to the challenge -- and a real challenge this will be. Stay tuned for more.
Nicely done but I am not so sure that you will be able to get the star effect using your camera as I don't think that you have the same aperture set up that a DSLR does (i.e. a number of blades that make up the iris diaphragm in a lens). I'm not an expert though so don't quote me!
@steampowered Thanks, Paul, for the feedback. I myself was, and still am, a bit dubious, but thought I'd give it the old college try. At the least, I'm learning something.
@sbolden Thanks, Scott. The reflections are actually off the metal utility box (with the buttons you push to get a walk signal) I set the camera on. It was a pretty good height and I liked the various reflections I got when I aimed in different directions and the traffic lights at that intersection.
@denidouble Thanks, Deni. I wasn't actually expecting to succeed first thing out of the gate. So, yeah, for a trial run, I was pleased that I got some sort of image I wouldn't mind posting here, even if I didn't get the star effect.
