I took almost no photos on my weekend trip to Minnesota. No shots whatsoever of the choir practice in St Paul or the Gymanfa Ganu (Welsh hymn singing session) at the Presbyterian Church in Mankato. As I walked back the few blocks from the restaurant where we had dinner to where I had parked my car near the church, I stopped to look at and play with a piece of outdoor art. The statue of the director/conductor is facing two sets of functional musical instruments - one like a xylophone and the other large chimes. They each had a pair of mallets hanging there so I tried them out. I would have happily spent more time at it, but I needed to get going as I was driving down to a hotel in northern Iowa for stopping place for the night.
There's something that is so appealing about this shot. I think it's the joy and passion the statue seems to exude. That he will direct and there will be music even if there's none.
