Even if the Riffelsee / Riffel lake (2,757 m) is nearly frozen over by now, it offers a great panorama and a diffuse reflection of the famous Matterhorn.
The Matterhorn is so famous that one simply must see especially if you are living in Switzerland. But since it's too far from our place for a day trip and so many wonderful outings closer to home, we do not often undertake the long journey (nearly 5 hours).
This year my 9 year old godchild and nephew F. had a special celebration and as a future mountain climber (his clear career aspiration) his biggest wish was to see the Matterhorn, so our gift was that we visit with him Zermatt.
It is already extra cold in the mountains (-4 up to -7°C) but we luckily had great weather and we spent three days hiking with Matterhorn views. Our and my godchilds favourite hike was the long hike that took us to the Riffelsee. We had views of the Matterhorn during the whole trek and F. did so well on all those steep, tricky and partially snow covered alpine trails.
@maggiemae You are right, Switzerland is not really big. But it is a bit like with your southern alps, sometimes you have to drive all around. It's like driving from Lake Pukaki to Fox Glacier. ;-)
What a lovely day you had; sop clear. It is really unpredictable where mountains are concerned. We were holidaying there a few years ago and never got to the top of Jungfrau. Saw the Eiger though!
