In Queens Park, there's a tree in the nature reserve with so many scratchings of people's names, it makes me wonder how they could do that to a poor tree.

Very interesting capture. I have been told by a horticulturist that this really doesn't harm the tree. What would kill it would be for someone to deeply carve a ring all the way around the trunk (or a branch). It seems trees get their nourishment through the phloem, which is the second layer of bark, and doing that would cut off it's food supply.
