Monkshood is not native to the area. It must have been planted long ago...found this one lone stalk in the middle of the woods behind my house.
"Aconitum, also known as "the queen of poisons", aconite, monkshood, wolf's bane, leopard's bane, women's bane, devil's helmet or blue rocket, is a genus of over 250 species of flowering plants belonging to the family Ranunculaceae. "
Nice shot! What's weird is, I just finished reading a novel in which monkshood was baked in a roll and fed to someone to kill them! I'd never heard of it before this week!
beautiful photo, love the composition and lighting - and love this plant. Have 4 more to get in the ground from local fall plant sales. At least with this one, I am assured the deer won't even nibble !
