This Viaduct Was Not Built By Isombard Kingdom Brunel [03]
I could not resist another story about this beautiful viaduct. The resident I was talking to also told me that the middle arch shown has collapsed. Actually arches collapse upwards. When they fail the middle tends to be pushed up and the sides fall inward. If you notice there is no parapet on this end of the viadict - there is on the other end. It was removed in order to attempt repairs. Look carefully, you can see it has a slightly peaked arch where even the huge girders have bent upward under the force of the collapse. Engineers have spent a huge amount of time and money injecting special epoxy glues and fixatives to hold the bridge together as well as other measures.Today the viaduct is still crossed by a train every 15 minutes or so. A remarkable feat of old and modern engineering!
