For my mentoring group street photography theme. I thought I would be fairly safe taking a picture of bins down the passageway by a row of shops. In the 30 seconds I stopped to take this shot two girls who lived above the shop walked up the alley way jeering at me shouting what was I taking photos for. Lost my momentum then so this was all I got. I'm too chicken for this street photography malarkey. Maybe it will be a genre I will admire from afar and never master. Processed image a bit but kind decide if it was best just as it was shot. Oh well.
So well seen and composed. Love the colors. A hair crooked perhaps. Keep trying with the street photography...it is one of my favorite types. Love the stories you can capture.
@newbank I can't shoot straight to save my life sometimes. It's tough. You have to be standing just so and who has time for that. I really do like it and sorry for pointing out the wonkiness:).
I like the wonkiness, it makes it more real, bins and doors and the mess just suit it. Great textures with the bricks. Love the colours. I would also love to do more street photography, but live very rural and have three children bouncing up and down :-)
You've got an eye for it, please keep trying Ruth, I think the more you do it, the less afraid you get.
Ha! Point and panic! That's funny, but oh so relatable! You still got great color and light. The first is the worst, right? Now your first is over, and the second will be easier. Best of luck!
@newbank Oh gosh Ruth I would be running for the hills if people started to comment on me taking photos!! This is what has been worrying me about the whole exercise. Particularly in a small town. Oh well I will have to be brave and get out there.
I like the light in your shot and the shadows. Nice textures. Perhaps this shot would do well in B&W to give it a more grungy feel to fit in with the subject. I feel I am not very good giving critique in this subject!!
Great shot. I get comments when I take photos too, but I can usually think quick, thank goodness. I think this would look good in b&w too it would definitely give it a more grungy look.
Personally being slightly off alignment does not bother me in the least. Street photography, in my opinion, is not about perfection the way that architecture, food, or product photography might be. As far as the attention you received, that surprises me but I can also understand that outside of a metropolis people might react differently. I've learned to be very quick, no more than a few seconds to get the shot - 3 seconds, 5 max, and to be very subtle and misleading about where the camera is pointed. I've also noticed people will pick up on my confidence level. If I stand still looking like I don't belong, or walk unsure, people begin to notice and look. If I stroll along relaxed like I own the place they seem to pay no attention. These comments are meant as encouragement to continue as I would love to see more street images from you. If they do not fulfill that purpose then please disregard them as my full intent is solely to be encouraging. This is a great image; personally for me it becomes about the various trash, some in one kind of bin, more in another, other trash in a pile, and then some straggling trash strewn about. As if the doors spewed out the trash to the street. Which in a way, they did. :) Great image, keep them coming!!!
Super shot, and I really like your edit on this. I agree with @icamera advice, and I hope this one bad incident does not put you off trying again. I was confronted once (early on in this project), and when I told them why I was taking a picture of an old parking meter in front of their store they were cool about it, but it was definitely intimidating!
Not a great experience with those girls, and I think I would have reacted the same way as you. @icamera is right about acting confident to get away with it, I'm just not good at that part. Some days we feel more vulnerable than others, so I hope it was a day like that for you, and tomorrow you feel more confident. Don't give up! You take such lovely shots of your boys, you just need to translate that to others. A lovely shot by the way. It looks like the green bin is in a spotlight.
Yes, you have to just ignore others and get out there! Sometimes it depends on my mood that day, if I am up for it or not. But try again on some day you feel confident. I really like this shot, you make garbage bins look good!
Fav for me, I really like the colour, texture, comp and light. I can understand your feelings, but I think this abuse simply shows the ignorance of those girls. I do take street pictures sometimes, and have never been treated in the way you describe. I think if you continue to do it from time to time, you'll find that it's not always the way it was for you when you made this picture.
Well done Ruth, pity the two morons spoiled your time there. I don't understand that mentality at all. I like this shot, the colours and shapes are great. Please don't be put off, just file it away under E - for Experience.
