I think the headache pills are making me giddy... I have no idea what it is about this shot that I like... it is not the photo I thought I would be posting today when I was out taking pictures... and it is not at all what I have in mind for the "Street Photography Now" challenge... I am not in any way convinced that this image has any redeeming qualities... but still I like it... please feel free to critique it to death and tell me to go back to square one and learn the ABCs of photography...
this is the type of image that only a true photographer/artist would capture. I know you don't want to think of yourself as a photographer, but you keep posting images that only a photographer would bother to take.
@jsw0109 tx Jeff... you are very kind and i really don't know what to say :) i don't feel in any way that i have an artistic eye, and i think often people see more in my photos than i do...
@northy that's the beautiful thing about photography and art. We don't have to see everything when we capture an image or paint an image... we just have to see something worth capturing. Just about anyone can take a picture of a flower and end up with a beautiful picture. Not many people can photograph dumpsters in an alley and make people THINK. That's what is beautiful about it. Its not just an alley with dumpsters, its a moment in time in which life has been frozen for us to observe and contemplate.
The first thing that popped into my mind was 'urban desolution'. I think this is a great capture, and b&w is a perfect choice. Sometimes scenes just speak to you; go with it, even if you can't explain why.
I agree with @jsw0109 Jeff. You have a photographer's eye. You make things look artistic seemingly effortlessly. From 'my' point of view, which is obviously not a professional one, I like the B&W, I always think street shots look more real when given this treatment. The perspective with the line of bins creating a diagonal through the shot, I guess this what leads your eye down until you reach the two figures at the far end. I think the shot wouldn't be anywhere near as good without these two in shot. And you have the rule of thirds (I think that's what it's called??) with the vertical line of the bins. The largest one being in the final third and the second figure and first bin in the first third. I believe whether you realise it or not you have a natural eye for knowing and understanding what works and at some point you are going to have to accept this fact ;oP xx
You are so hard on yourself and yet so talented... sheesh!
The only thin I would even slightly change is to take a little off the bottom and shave the last bin off the right. just a little crop
I agree with Jeff's comment. You really have a great eye for great street photos! And a great take to the theme. Bins.. who could have thought. I like it very much!
I like it, its well composed and there's good light and shadow and repetition! Granted, they're bins, but its reality, and I think we can all relate to this scene!
i've kind of gotten away from doing the "thank you" thing (after the third debate on the issue in 3 months!), but i really wanted to respond this time to let you know how much i truly appreciate all the support you give me... 365 is a perpetual source of inspiration... i could not do any of this on my own...
Life is not always a bed of roses and this is the side of life that we probably would prefer to ignore but it is part of our life which makes it a great street shot.
I like the bins as a lead in line to the distant figures. I like the framing of those figures by the overhead structure and I like its mood! So what's not to like? Possible improvements: greater tonal range so we get some blacks to balance that very light foregrouns. Upping the contrast might do it but it risks burning out the foreground. Maybe a cat, prefeably black, in that foreground - or possibly a body! Its a good shot!
Dude, I won't critique you to death at all! This one is gorgeous! I mean not that 'gorgeous' in a way like you say a landscape is gorgeous, but you know, it's just a great picture. I can't exactly say why. It's reality and human ingenuity can be destroying. I love the pov and b&w! (:
@monika64 hey Monika... i meant to respond to your comment and totally forgot... it's interesting that you suggest that crop... i had originally tried it and didn't like it... but... this is an area where i think i must be very much the odd-lady-out because i tend to like hints and bits of things on the edges of images, and several folks have commented before about cropping those things out (or getting the whole bit in)! i need to look at this more and see if i can "see" it from that perspective... thank you so much for bringing this up!
@yrhenwr tx David... i need to figure out the whole b&w thing... PSE lets you play with various types of b&w and i want to figure out what the differences are and when to invoke them... a black cat would have been cool... a body - shudder - not so much!!!
I think I like things neat because my hubby is a graphic designer and in commercial art there are no extra bits or parts of things sticking in to pictures and I am often the opposite, cropping/cloning things out when they 'mess up' the edges. I would never crop out the lovely leaning pole on the left hand side though.
I will try out some objects on the edge....maybe ;)
Great title. I think this is *almost* a really powerful shot, though I can't quite put my finger on what ingredient is missing... I like it though. Also ditto re silver efex pro, it is 'da bomb' :)
