To be honest, I am not sure if he was looking at her, looking at the train, or looking to see what i was shooting...
And yes, I know I need to stop with these train shots... they are becoming my "go to" when inspiration fails me... the subway stations have light and lines and can be so much fun to play with in black and white :)
Better big on black should you feel so inclined...
Thanks so much for the views and lovely comments on my recent pics... seems so many are short of time these days, so I really appreciate it when you find time to visit here :)
Terrific, love the high shoes and men turning head backwards. High contrast really works. Just let me know when you are ready to get pushed ......into film
@peterdegraaff so... i went to the camera store and they told me to look for a film camera on eBay or Kijiji or a pawn shop... went to a couple pawn shops and realized i hadn't a clue what i was looking for and the lady behind the counter at one of them scared the crap outa me (NOT someone i wanted to meet in a dark alley ;p)... so i am still without a working film camera (i do have one that doesn't work)... i may make another foray tomorrow or friday for one... you'll be the first to know!
@northy Let me know what you think you would like (rangefinder, p$&s, SLR, TLR or folder) and how much you want to spend and I'll suggest something for you on eBay. I avoid pawn shops.
I really love the high contrast and the movement of the train! Nothing like this around here so I love that you do these shots...otherwise I'd never see them! :)
@peterdegraaff guess i need to do some research... i have an old pentax slr mz-50 which i used a LOT back 10-15 years ago... but it is broken... and other than that, i know from nothing... which is part of the problem... i don't even know how to ask the questions! i guess i'd be most comfortable with an SLR that uses 35mm film... it would be nice to not spend more than $75 to $100 or so... ???
I know what you mean about 'go-to' shots. I work near a train station, and head there at lunchtime most days. I've posted a few train pics, but I'm trying not to overwhelm my album with them.
But I can't help it. I love them so. And your capture is great!
@northy I bought a nice little Chinon CM-4S the other day for fifty dollars which is super easy to use and batteries are readily available. I also as you know am keen on the Olympus OM series. The Olympus Infinity Stylus II is a classic point and shoot and millions were made. Others prefer early Canons and Nikons. It is easy to buy nice ones on eBay. Main thing to look for is whether the light meter works and how easy it is to get batteries.
Don't stop with the subway shots! I love them! Its something I don't see around here! I would be shooting them all the time! The B&W works so well here! Love the composition!
Cool. Had a look at it large. Love it. I can just about hear the noise of it all. Fav again. I may just have to try to find an underground station here (don't think we have one for trains: just buses) to see if I can emulate your greatness with these shots.
Ok, I see that you've made this b&W but what else have you done? My Black and Whites are sort of shades of grey (no pun intended) I am loving what you are doing and am here to learn :)
@stuckinoz i think underground for buses would work fine... i keep meaning to try for some bus bay shots - but i'm not at them on a regular basis...
@monika64 hey Monika... i use Nik Silver Effex to converty to b&w and it has a LOT of things you can do with it... first i go thru the various presets it has to see which one i like best for a particular pic... i think this one was silhouette - gives a very high contrast... then i play with the sliders (for brightness, contrast and structure) and filters until i get the look i want... i think i lightened up his face and darkened her hair so they stood out more (nik has a thingy to do this)... nik also has a bunch of toners... i mostly use selenium for trains... it gives that steely almost-but-not-quite blue quality to the image... does that help?
@frida tx!! i didn't add any blur... the shutter speed was comparatively slow, so there's some motion blur from the train... and i de-emphasized structure in post processing a bit which prolly adds to the blur....
But I can't help it. I love them so. And your capture is great!
