with apologies to Magritte by northy

with apologies to Magritte

gaaaaaaaaaaaah! my get pushed challenge this week set by @janturnbull was to do colour (again) and "to create a photograph in the style of a famous painting - it could be any artist from any period, but it must be recognisably that artist's style"...

so - i suck at art and i suck at colour and this was HARD! i looked thru my art book and discovered that all the paintings i liked were either monochrome, or completely surreal, or (most likely) both! i worked on a Magritte inspired image yesterday, which was an epic fail and will not see the light of day... this was tonight's effort... an epic fail in terms of channelling Magritte, but i kind of liked it in its own right...

it was meant to emulate the Rider in the Woods image (which isn't showing up on the wikipedia site as one of Magritte's so now i'm starting to wonder... but whatevs):

i clearly need to go back to the drawing board... but IT'S.NOT.OVER!!!!

thank you all so very much for your wonderful response to my watcher shot... it made the top 20 and that was pretty much the highlight of my week :)
@janturnball - ok - wicked push this is! i am not satisfied with this as a response and will be trying again tomorrow!

I do think this is a very interesting photo

Awesome shot

I do like it in it's own right -- a fascinating image. Like Magritte's, it asks us to take a second, a third look. Simple and complex at the same time.

Well I'm so glad you haven't stopped your chess shots. T'riffic shot! (And not "triffic shit" as I originally mistyped!)

For me this looks like a piece of Japanese art. The texture of the edit does it. Very cool.

Firstly a great link and you have captured much of the intent and subtle restraint of Magritte's work - the push was for a styling & IMHO you have met it well - I thoroughly enjoy the fact that you have also married this push to your own fascinating series - Am looking forward to more!

Lovely imagination

Love your take on this. It would make a cool print.

I like the simple colours and composition. It may not be an exact copy of Magritte but I think you've combined your style and his to great effect.

wow, love this. The black looks so lovely next to that shade of green.

I'm sorry if this was too far out of your comfort zone, but it really is a good take on Magritte - it's also known as The Blank Check. Thank you for takingup the challenge!

@janturnbull no worries at all! For a bunch of reasons, not all of them art or photography related, this is a really excellent exercise for me... Ido a lot of work in change management and part of what I do is advise sr execs on leading change - it's good for me to be reminded what it feels like to be taken out of my comfort zone if I am going to expect others to deal with it :)

Very cool concept and good effort. Glad you didn't go for any of those Magritte shots of the middles of naked women looking like faces ...

Very cool shot. Please do keep the chess shots coming, they are all fantastic.
May 12th, 2013
Very cool shot. I love the processing. And I love all of your chess shots.
May 12th, 2013
it does look like a painting! :) well done you!

Love the grainy look of this. Great processing.

Cool interpretation of the "Rider in the Woods" image - love that it is so relevant to your own chess series. Your tags made me smile! : )

Brilliant interpretation. How can you say you're no good at art!! Your photographic work is incredibly artistic xx

This shot feels like a special one to me, I really really like this! I see where the inspiration came but I think you made this one your own. The muted tones are perfect. Love how much effort you put into your art and it inspires me to get more serious too. Did I say I love this ? Fav.

I like your take on this.
