@kerristephens Thanks Kerri! @httpgeffed Colleen!!?? How could you not photograph that?! lol Thanks! @potsbypam Thanks Pam! @crickle1969 Thanks Chrystal! Three treasures from childhood/teen years. @elizabeth Thanks Elizabeth! They are on display in a small curio shelf in my bedroom. @anazad511 I think so Ana- Swedish or Swiss. Two of them came from the World's Fair ('64 or '65, in NYC) and one a friend brought me from a trip. I just can't remember if she went to Switzerland or Sweden. I've long since lost touch with her. I do remember that the designs are very distinct- each family has it's own pattern or colors or something like that, which made it quite interesting that she happened to pick the same design as the two I already had. I don't think she knew I had them! @eudora Thank you Diane! @salza Thank you Sally! @lyno Thank you Lyn! @bruni Thank you Bruni!
@lyno@bruni Lyn and Bruni: BeFunky.com is lots of fun. It has quite a large variety of effects and such that are free and apparently you can bump that up and get more- but I find that the free stuff has endless possibilities! Bruni, it's pretty easy to use and I've only scratched the surface on the different applications. The first time you try it,it will take some adjusting to because it's not laid out like Picmonkey or Ribbet, but once you figure out where everything is, it's just as easy as those two. I tend to like the "Artsy" effects which turn the photo into something that looks like a painting. But they've got quite a few of the other types too- like a fish eye lens, lomo, sepia, posterize, pop art, etc. I've even processed shots on other sites and uploaded them to BeFunky just to use their "Grunge" frames which are sort of smeary and artsy, but look really cool. Lyn- I pop all over the place when I want to do something fun with my processing. Sometimes I have in my mind a "feel" that I want for the picture so I choose the processing site based on that. All of the ones I use are free and relatively easy to use. I tried GIMP once and hated it. Way too hard to understand. I looked into Photoshop but felt it would not be a wise use of my money when the processing I like to do, I can do for free on the sites I already use. I've also tried a couple other freebies that weren't as good as the ones I already use, so I basically use Picmonkey, iPiccy, Ribbet and BeFunky now. I have a new one to check out at some point called Smilebox, but I haven't done it yet. Maybe at some point during the Awesome August challenge I will. Anyway, that's your "Tips From Ann" installment for the day!
@pandorasecho I hadn't thought about that, but yes there are some strong similarities. I guess decorative art/folk art has some overlap from country to country mainly because it's based on common or natural shapes and patterns. Good spot Dixie!
Definitely it's a Swedish wooden horse: Wikipedia says: A Dalecarlian horse or Dala horse (Swedish: Dalahäst) is a traditional carved and painted wooden statuette of a horse originating in the Swedish province of Dalarna. In the old days the Dala horse was mostly used as a toy for children; in modern times it has become a symbol of Dalarna as well as Sweden in general.
I was in Sweden as a child and remembered them, they are really nice.
@anazad511 Thanks Ana! I'll have to copy that down on a note card to keep with them so I don't forget now! How kind of you to look that up for me! And my- you have been all over the world! @paulavdmerwe Thanks Paula!
@woot Thanks Davide! The processing has brightened them up somewhat. They are still colorful but the patina has mellowed with age. That doesn't really matter though because your observation is true- red, white, green and yellow are a great combination of colors!
I thought they were Mexican too! Interesting to hear what they are and how families had different designs. And thanks for the lesson on befunky.com! I need to try that!
Oh wow....what a coincidence!!! I have one of these. My mom gave it to me 40 some odd years ago....from Royal Copenhagen, I believe. She used to get many of my gifts there and started me on the Royal Copenhagen Christmas plate collection, too, which is now continued by my husband.....such a cute idea for a shot....well done!
@sandier Thanks Sandie! I am really a dabbler at this processing stuff. I like to fool around with different effects to see what they do and then when I land on something I like I keep it! @wenbow Thanks Wendy! @ellimae Thanks Ellen! I was thinking more in line with the equestrian events- but they use horses for Polo, so that's correct too! I particularly like the jumps and dressage. @kandernob Thanks Karen! @myautofocuslife Thanks Livia! (Sorry they didn't have more green in them!) @sangwann Thanks Dione! @cimes1 Thanks Carole! Did you see Ana's research up there? I couldn't remember which exhibit we got them from at the World's Fair or the country my friend visited to bring me back the third one as a souvenir. There is a real rescue horse near here but I didn't think I'd get over there to photograph it by the end of the week so these fellows graciously stood in. @nicolecampbell Thanks Nicole- another grouping of some childhood treasures. @alia_801 lol Alia!
@olivetreeann My parents went to the NY World's Fair in 1965. They could have bought it there but I seem to recall it was from the Royal Copenhagen catalog.
@cimes1 We lived so close to it and went there constantly. I think we came home with a little trinket most of the time. I have quite a few things from it and all of them are special to me in one way or another. That's pretty neat that you have one too.
@filsie65 Thanks Phil- glad you enjoyed BeFunky- I could really go crazy with that site, so I'm always limiting myself! But I love those artsy effects!
@ronphotos365 Thank you Ron! They are some of my favorite things from the 1964/5 World's Fair and a friend who gave me one. I appreciate the view and comment! Thanks for stopping by!
