GRT August 12

You didn't think I'd go to a tractor pull and not find any rust, did you?
I read where you said to use the AV setting. I am just learning so what does that setting do for me? Love your photos and want to learn how to get off of auto.

@miata2u Thank you Peggy! I used the AV setting on my moon shot this week. That was the setting which was recommended to me as I'd never taken one before and am learning more about the technical aspects of photography just like you. I am going to do a little research on what that actually means as I'm not exactly sure why it works best for moon shots and now I want to know! I'll be right back....

@miata2u So here's what I learned: AV is aperature values mode. This setting automatically adjusts the shutter speed to suit your aperature value. The aperature is the size of the opening made by the iris of your lens. It's referred to as the f stop. Basically, and hopefully I'm understanding this correctly, it's how much light gets into the camera to record the image. When the image is darker, the camera adjusts to let more light in. When the image is brighter, it adjusts to let less light in. In the case of the moon shot, the setting would normally be conforming to a night shot- allowing as much light in as possible because it's dark outside. However, the moon is actually reflecting the light of the sun, therefore we "trick" the camera in the AV setting to take a reading for daylight. That keeps the camera from over-exposing the moon and allows the craters and other details to show up. As far as this shot goes, I think it actually was taken on an auto setting. This camera is totally new to me and since I wasn't going back to the fair again, I didn't want to take any chances in blowing a shot! Plus, I was practicing with my zoom and I wasn't sure how much to adjust the camera for that either. However, it is also possible I had it set on P (program mode) which allows you to change the ISO as you see fit and the camera then adjusts everything else accordingly. For someone like you (and me) this is a good way to ease off of Auto and into the more creative shooting modes. Most of this used to come naturally to me when I was shooting with my 35mm SLR camera. But I'm now completely shooting digital and relearning the way I think about shots! I hope that answers your question in a way you understand. Please feel free to follow me and ask as many questions as you want. They are a good way for me to learn as well. I am not only learning a new system with this camera, I have also recently been given on loan an EOS Rebel T3i, so I am learning that camera too!

@allie912 @vega @daisymiller @kerristephens @leananiemand

Thank you Allison, Vega, Daisy, Kerri and Leana! Ah, yes, you can never get enough rust shots! After 31 days of it in July you'd think I'd be sick of it now. Not so!

That's great. I wish I had my camera this afternoon when we were out. We passed a man on an old rusty tractor driving across his front yard. Odd thing was, he was dress in a suit and tie (well, without the suit jacket). My daughter just laughed and said, "Well, I think he's just a little bit over dressed!" I guess he was a gentleman farmer! LOL! Too bad I was driving.
