This is the high contrast version of the old mill shot. I used a blue filter in NikEfex Pro and it brought out the reflections much more. Not sure about this one at all and am interested in your comments.
This is for my mentoring group and the new theme B&W High contrast
I like this version. For me the contrast has highlighted the detail in the brickwork and windows. I might even consider a letterbox crop to crop out the reflections and really draw your eye to the brickwork. Just an idea....I do love reflections as well.
I think the two make an interesting contrast as the b&w has the more decayed feel to it. What Ruth is referring to in the crop is a useful idea. I wonder if by centering the line between building and reflection/water, it makes it harder for the viewer to know where we are supposed to look -- what is the focus? building or reflection? If you moved the dividing line to 1/3 or 2/3 horizontally, it might make the composition more balanced and focused. Re the two versions, they have a totally different feeling for me. Color is about the story of an old mill and a serene scene, while b&w is asking me to examine the brickwork and reflections in detail.
I definitely like what you got with the blue filter, Pam. And @TaffyR has great advice about the dividing line. I've been working on that myself. It's such an interesting subject.
Hi Pam, I'm a little torn on the amount of contrast. On the one hand, I really like how it's picked out the details in the building. The bricks and the window panes are so well defined, and the glass looks so light and foggy. However, I think that the contrast has also really darkened some areas, leaving them more as black pools that distract me from other areas of the photo. I'd be curious to see how the photo would look if you raised the shadows some to bring more of the detail in the reflections to light.
@taffy@newbank@888rachel@sullivar I like the way you've brought out the details in the building Pam, but I think the high contrast hasn't worked as well for the foreground. Maybe a little crop would be in order?
@newbank@taffy@golftragic@sullivar Many thanks for your comments on this shot. I have taken your advice ruth and Taffy and cropped out the reflections bringing the focus up to the brickwork. I think this works better and makes the composition more balanced.
