Yellow Water Irises by pcoulson

Yellow Water Irises

A new stretch of the lake was cleaned up in the winter it is now lined with yellow Irises.
I think these yellow irises are so pretty. Unfortunately they’re classed as a noxious weed here, and so are destroyed

They look so pretty all lined up. Are they from planted bulbs? I did not realize irises were weeds in other places, as @yorkshirekiwi said.

I can't believe something this pretty could be called a noxious weed. one person's beauty is another person's trash as they say. Or is that backwards?

Love the vibrant yellow. We have some of these down by our stream.

@henrir Thank you for your comment Henri, I din't think its considered to be a weed over here as its on sale in most garden centres:)

@pcoulson @louannwarren @henrir I think the problem is they interfere with NZ native fauna and flora - The rhizomes form dense floating mats, displacing native plants and potentially causing flooding and water level changes in swamps. Poisonous seeds may also affect native birdlife - surprisingly the beautiful blue agapanthus are in the same category!

@yorkshirekiwi Now that explains it all Carole thanks for letting us know, makes so much more sense to protect the native/natural environment:)
