Reputedly named after the Earl of Sandwich, who apparently asked his butler to bring him "some meat between two pieces of bread" to avoid disturbing a marathon game of cards.

Interesting to see where it all started. Up North in the UK where I come from they called them butties down south in London I believe they are sarnies and in Australia they are known as sangers.
