Rochdale Canal Lock No 1 by peadar

Rochdale Canal Lock No 1

For any canal enthusiast, I think the first lock of the canal holds a special significance (the locks are all numbered to aid navigation). This is the point where the Calder & Hebble Navigation joins the Rochdale Canal, in Sowerby Bridge. This, therefore, is Rochdale Canal Lock No 1. From here the canal loops north, then to east and then southwards, as it makes its way across the Pennines to Manchester, rising 600ft above sea level. The engineering involved was and is staggering, only fairly recently matched by the opening of the M62 Motorway. It remains one of the highest canals in the entire UK. There are 91 locks, fairly evenly split between the two sides of the Pennines, and the total length is a mere 32 miles.

I've processed this in line with my recent Yorkshire shots - slightly desaturated but tonally warm, and fairly high contrast.
Wonderful shot! Does one have to operate the locks oneself?

@jacqbb Jacq, it varies across the network. Mostly yes. At busy locks, or where, for example there is a "flight" or "staircase" series of locks, then there is usually a lock-keeper. However they are usually conductors, not drivers! Some (few) locks are electrically operated. I could go on... and on, and on...

I love this image - the lighting and tones really enhance the fascinating, historic details of the locks.

You have captured the structure of the locks well, and it seems in harmony with its surroundings.
