The bassoon is an 8ft conical tube, that is bent, at about the 4ft mark, back on itself. This occurs in something which is romantically called the "bottom joint", which you can see here. Each of the finger holes and keys you see here thus connects with a different part of the two tubes that flow down and up this section - ah, now this is getting boring! It's a bassoon, it has lots of keys, it's complicated!!!
@paddleandsnap Lynne, my Dad was a musician with the Highland Light Infantry from 1934 to 1948, playing the clarinet. When I was young, I remember one day I was watching a kid's cartoon called "Hector's House", and the accompanying music featured the bassoon. My Dad mentioned how much he loved the instrument, so when I was given the chance later on, I jumped at it...
@lizzy_lu123 Thanks, Lisa! @paintdipper Thank you, Junan, it's a difficult instrument to capture as it's so long!!! @kimcrisp Thanks, Kim. If you heard one being played you'd realise how often they are used in all kinds of music.
As a brass player myself, I must admit the bassoon is my favourite woodwind instrument and you have catured it beautifully in your shot. I can almost hear the sound.
