Well, for those who have not played in an orchestra, this is what it looks like sitting in the back row of the woodwind (i.e. where the bassoons usually sit). In front of us we have (on this occasion only), more bassoon players then ranks of string players. Unfortunately, behind us are the percussion (ouch!).
This is a rehearsal for a concert on Wednesday 18th April, at The Barbican Centre, London. A gaggle of us old alumni of the London Schools Symphony Orchestra are joining the present orchestra for a performance of Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks, in its original scoring, which involves 24 oboes and 12 bassoons. It will be a special occasion for me, to play again for the Orchestra that changed my life in many ways.
And, I don't think I've ever played with that many bassoons in the same room in my life!
I used to work at Glasshouse yard - and can remember the Barbican centre being opened.
Interesting B&W shot - shows off the metal in that right hand bassoon wonderfully.
