Sun this morning, better get out! By the time I'd reached this village, the sky had clouded over and I had to stay in the car for 10 minutes waiting for the rain to clear!
This is Farningham Mill, "a corn mill built on a most expensive mechanical construction" in the 18th century to replace a previous mill dated to 1610. The Domesday Book noted a water mill in the Manor of "Femingehame" in 1087. I thought I would process in B&W to aid the historical context, but also to make up for the very poor light!
Thanks, everyone, for your comments over the past few days. I really appreciate them all.
Nice shot Peter, worth waiting 10 minutes!! I am trying to imagine the colour whilst simultaneously travelling back in time to 1610 to see if it works in b&w! And you know, I think it does!
@yrhenwr David, that's a good point. Historical perspective, we imagine everything before 1890 was in B&W, don't we (well, me, anyway). Funnily enough, I never imagine France in B&W, only Britain.
yes - but Holland influenced USa obviously - and this looks more like Dutch "abroad" than Dutch in Holland. Maybe there were Dutch or Flemish builders around when this was built? It's a wonderful building anyway :-)
Now there's a name that caught my eye! I wonder if my great-great-great-grandmother ever walked past that barn. My ancestors came from parishes all around there and on my recent trip over, we discovered who exactly she was and that she was from Farningham. Thank you for posting this! It's a very interesting building. I love the attic windows and I'm wondering if there was a purpose to the arches over the doorways or are they just decorative?
