Inspired by others on 365, this is my take on it. I couldn't quite get the focus to my liking; if anyone has any advice please do tell and I'll try again another day. Anyway, another one ticked off the list...
Thanks for all your comments and Favs recently, really appreciate it!
That's really cool, Peter. Did you try focussing manually? Using the zoom option in live view mode? I just noticed that you have a 7D, now; congratulations. I'm very jealous!
@damianpowell Damian, yes I was on manual focus, I tried autofocus as well, in the various settings you get on the 7D, none of it seemed to work brilliantly. I'm starting to think I had the gas on too high which was causing the individual flames to dance around too much. I might go back and test that theory anyway. And yes, I LOVE the 7D. I got a great deal from SLRHut online - they ship from New York, but it was a long way cheaper than anything on offer in the UK. Worth investigating!
Neat shot, Peter. . I don't think I've seen one of these on 365 and it's a good inspiration. AND welcome to my Canon 7d world. . .I know you're going to LOVE it!!
Your aperture seems too wide to get good focus here on the dancing flames. Since the flames can be translucent, the AF will get fooled. You can try getting the camera on a tripod & focussing manually.
@henrir Thank you, Henri! @anoeska You are so kind, thank you! @twocups Thanks, James, all these "easy" shots are surprisingly difficult! @soboy5 Thank you, Danny!
@shuttertux Thanks for the comment. The camera was on a tripod, and I tried manual focus and the many autofocus options on the 7D; I had it on timer so camera shake was eliminated. I tried everything!!!
But thanks, anyway :-)
@fannyb Fanny, yep, did that, although I think that is part of the problem. Low ambient light means you are limited at how fast you can get to. One to come back to... (maybe...)
I'm still learning so I asked my husband and he suggests: ShutterTux is right, You need more depth of field so less aperture - f11 maybe, but you won't get enough exposure at that. Try f5.6 and 1/50th sec, manual focus and a tripod. Take two shots each focussed on one of the rings and Photoshop them together. VERY tricky subject!
I think this is good as it is Peter, flames are constantly moving and fluid, so a little motion blur adds to that sense! You are ticking shots off your list right, left and centre, well done!
I had the same problem Peter, lousy focus, but just thinking now, how would it be if you began with the lights on then focused on the edge of the metal top before you lit the gas?
Here is a similar shot I tried last year : http://365project.org/shuttertux/365/2012-05-09
And congrats on the 7D. :-)
@anoeska You are so kind, thank you!
