S for Sugar

The remains of a Halifax aircraft which crashed in 1944 with the loss of 8 crew.
Although a bomber, this one wasn't on operations at the time it crashed, it was attached to a training unit in Yorkshire and the aircraft was on a night navigation exercise.
Approaching from the rear of this picture, they clipped the mountain about ten feet lower than the summit.

I spent a lot of time mooching around in the Lakes as a kid, looking for wrecks. This being one of the 'best' as far as amount of material left, I spent a lot of time here. It's hard to be in the area now and not pass by to pay my respects

This site has some information about it, and the crew:

They were as depressingly young as you would imagine.
Very intriguing

Interesting debris field. Nicely composed.

That seems to be one of the main landing gear. There's a scar just above it (behind the camera) with lumps of molten aluminum still stuck to the rocks, and then a lot of the debris is over the cliff in Broad Slack.

Given the distance from the base of the cliff, I'm a believer in the 'momentum carried some of the wreckage over' theory, although the web page author has a different view.
