I was lucky enough today to see a display of birds of prey. My biggest challenge to myself was to get some shots of birds in flight.
I COULD show you several photos of bare ground, empty sky, uninhabited perches etc etc but I did manage to capture a few action shots.
Sugarpuff is a Siberian eagle owl and was the last of 4 birds to fly in the demo.
I've just realised that my shot of the bird of paradise flower made PP, so thank you all for that!
A small and belated September update for 2024, where I am still, after many years' membership, on 365 Project, also now posting elsewhere but wanting...
Joaozito, thank you! I love owls and my favourite is the barn owl which to me is just so incredibly beautiful. I have a shot of that to post another day!
I was shooting with shutter speed but I think I had it too fast as I had to lighten up the shot. (Trying hard to use settings and not just rely on auto!)
@quietpurplehaze
I know what you mean but sometimes auto can catch a shot you might otherwise miss. I always shoot in manual unless it's moving and I know that I might not get another chance It helps sometimes but not always, sooo much to learn ........
I actually set up a few modes on the camera, aperture for still shots, SS for moving ones, P for macro etc etc and tried to vary them. The beauty of my Panasonic bridge is that in replay it gives you all the details so I try to keep learning what has worked!!
Great shot. Birds are so hard to catch. With a plane you can aim and pan because you know where it'll be next, but not with a bird. You did a wonderful job here.
Thank you - the funniest moment in this demo was when a vulture landed right beside me on the bench and I didn't see him at first as my eyes were glued to the camera!
Superb & exciting capture of a magnificently superior bird. The detail of wing & feathers are amazing, I can almost feel their soft warm texture. This shot was perfectly times & captured in perfect colours, well done.
Sorry Hazel I am confused, when shooting birds of prey or any action shot are you not suppose to shoot the sky? Ground? Backs of heads? No? Ah that is where I am going wrong;0)
Cracking shot, would be wonderful to take off with him
this is fantastic Hazel instant Fav i use auto for my bird of prey and Aircraft photos or the fast settings as the speed they fly the birds of prey fly
Maybe I'll have to trust auto next time Gerry. I must get to Marwell Zoo soon! You certainly get some great plane shots. Thanks for the comment and fav.
Lovely flight shot Hazel.Fav!!
I always set my camera Drive to Al Servo (Canon) which gives me more frames per second. That way you can normally get more shots in focus as you pan with the moving bird. Not sure if your camera allows you to do that.
This is an awesome capture! Love it. And I laughed at your caption, when you say you could show us bare ground or empty sky - do you know how often that happens to me? Ha!
I did try some on HDR (?) but also have (limited)continuous shoot so can try that another time. I tried various other things! But I think it boils down to the quickness of the hand and eye plus a bit of luck in the end! Many thanks for comment and fav.

Pete, you're so kind - I think maybe it was just due to lucky reflexes - but I was nonetheless pleased to get a couple of 'in-flight' shots!

I did think of posting a collage of the ones I missed but sadly I've deleted them all!!!!
