I've been waiting weeks hoping to visit The Crypt at Winchester Cathedral. It's been flooded and only recently re-opened. The water is now about a foot deep and it's possible to use the viewing platform again. The sculpture is Sound II by Antony Gormley.
The original Norman east wing of the Cathedral was built over the crypt which remains virtually unchanged and which contains a well under the High Altar.
I found this incredibly difficult to photograph: the lack of light, reflections, pale colours of the stone - I now have a 12-month pass to the Cathedral and I'm sure I will be returning.
A small and belated September update for 2024, where I am still, after many years' membership, on 365 Project, also now posting elsewhere but wanting...
I think this is a terrific image, and a fav for me. The figure is beautiful and the reflections lovely. I have a pass for Ely Cathedral, and it's well worth having.
this is a spectacular shot, hazel. especially that there was flood waters remaining. the reflection made the shot all the more special. i love old churches especially the ones you have over there. this, i can fav a thousand times.
Yes, it's quite often flooded. Even when the water subsides completely, the floor has to be left to dry out for a while so it is not damaged when folk walk on it. (For me water = reflections is most interesting!)
Ha - my pic of this was my most viewed for a few years! Stunning isn't it :-)
For a contrast of one taken on a sunny day - albeit still in water.. http://365project.org/rvm/365/2012-10-19
Amazing capture... the water and reflections make it something you'll never be able to capture again! Beautiful architecture, but the water lines make it so unique and interesting! fav
Wonderful image Hazel, really special. Something I find really interesting is that this statue is in flood water. One of Anthony Gormleys most famous works is on Crosby beach and they are all flooded each tide
That is absolutely amazing! I know there is water there, but I can't tell where it begins (or ends). Fantastic capture - you have caught the reflections VERY well. Fav for me!
You've done a great job, I was there a couple of years ago but bought a postcard as my photo's didn't do it justice. A fav for me, great photo and happy memories of a lovely day with my mum and daughter.
Debbie - happy to recall some memories for you. You can buy prints in Winchester Cathedral's online shop now - in view of this i think it's gracious of them to allow photography.
Here you are Hazel....had to over page after page to find you!!!! Not sure I like this new layout!! I think Antony Gormlely was meant to stand in water ...this looks fabulous!
Oh WOW, Hazel, my friend, you have created a photographic masterpiece here. Even my husband stopped in his tracks to look at it, and you know he is usually very dismissive of my time spent on 365!
I have a long relationship with Antony Gormley, originating from Crosby where his "Other Place" installation is found. I also won a signed limited print of his when one of my art students won a competition on the inauguration of Tate Britain.
I haven't seen this one, so I think we now know where we may be heading in may!
Yes, Julie, that would be great - also the river, cathedral close, King Alfred's statue, the Great Hall, plus gorgeous architecture in Winchester! Thank you so much for supportive comments.
David - thank you! I've seen two other shots of this and I think mine stands up very well to them (I'm being very polite!). I want to go back and have another go at a landscape shot - but the gate which stops you falling into the foot-deep water gets in the way! I did try to make it a feature but it spoilt the shots.
Have to mirror (no pun intended) the comments of others re Gormley and water. Was working in Crosby a while ago, so made a quick trip to the "other place" eager to see the statues, only to find it was high tide and there was nothing to see but sea. So I had a nice cream instead ;)
Hazel - hearty congrats on making the TT - twice! Well-deserved, this shot in particular was different and completely stunning! I wonder if the sculptor ever imagined seeing it like this?
Just seen this, Hazel (29/3). Missed some days recently. It's a superb image, I'm sure I can't add to what has been said above. Belated fav and well done on TT.
Had to do a very small clone on this one too!!!!! (I had an interesting time capturing this, first I had to persuade a volunteer guide that I did not want to see the big bible but to go straight to the crypt - he seemed reluctant to tell me where it was!
Rosie, thank you - this is the most time I've ever spent on post-processing a shot.

The Crypt is quite often a bit flooded - I don't know the exact amount of time when it is dry or wet.

Interesting - quite different tones. I shall have to look for a sunny day next time!
Lovely crisp capture
I guess Gormley may have an affinity with water! I certainly do - photographically, I mean.

Agreed, not so interesting when dry! I like the new layout but suspect it's designed to keep us on here longer!!!

I'm glad you got the positive from that situation (ice-cream)! You could go back?!
Thanks. Lots more to see around here!
No, Karin, don't have a tripod. A friend is going to lend me one to have a practice but I really don't envisage carrying it around with me.
You're kind to think of it, Jan - I would then be doubly surprised!!!
Thank you all for favs and comments - really unexpected to get on TT again!
Patricia, thank you - unimaginable really - twice!
Thanks, ladies - what a great boost!!!!
Had to do a very small clone on this one too!!!!! (I had an interesting time capturing this, first I had to persuade a volunteer guide that I did not want to see the big bible but to go straight to the crypt - he seemed reluctant to tell me where it was!
many thanks!!
Many thanks!!
thanks so much everybody - this is the stuff dreams are made of - to get onto TT!!!!
Thanks so much to you all - Paula - as long as I don't roll off the edge!!!
Thanks, Claire - it's mostly incredible to me!
Rosie, thanks - love your boots - I have some red ones but not quite as vibrant as yours!
