I saw these in a garden in Eastleigh yesterday and luckily had taken my little Panasonic Lumix with me.
The bright berries are from the purple/blue iris and I found online that they do not get eaten by the birds. I'm not sure of the reason - either they smell or taste too bad I guess.

What an unfortunate name for such a lovely plant. I had to Google it and discovered that according to Wikipedia it is known as "stinking" because some people find the smell of its leaves unpleasant when crushed or bruised, an odour that has been described as "beefy". You learn something every day.
I can feel more research coming on!
As long as we don't try to put this in a casserole with some onions?!
