at first glance, la Reine Margot by Suzan Swale ....
....looks like a colourful, beautiful piece of theatrical costume. In fact it is a painting (not too visible in my photo) and dress installation which she calls a 'bleeding map of the world'. It was inspired by:
her earlier piece 'Ghost'
the historical film 'La Reine Margot'
the 'Mappa' Map tapestries

I can testify to the goriness of the film. When we saw it a few years ago I had to ask Ray, after about 15 mins, to take me out of the cinema otherwise I thought I was going to pass out.
We saw this yesterday in an exhibition by The London Group at Mottisfont Abbey. Photos were allowed so I made the most of the opportunity.
A small and belated September update for 2024, where I am still, after many years' membership, on 365 Project, also now posting elsewhere but wanting...
Waw !! what an absolutely stunning piece of work without the story one can read whatever one wishes in looking at the beautifully coloured dresses in the painting I love it very much !
To me it's strange because it only became gory once I read the details! I'm glad I didn't see any more of the film La Reine Margot either - imagine if I'd actually passed out in the cinema - I felt rather silly!
Thanks, Lucy, for your comment and the fav.
I guess it was the colour (plus the elegant shape of the dress) which drew me - then I realised what it represented!
