The light was filtered through the trees and selectively lit up portions of the pathway.
This was processed in LR for black and white February day 26th already!

View on black, cut the brightness some and up the shadows and... this becomes positively (that should probably be negatively) dystopian. Either way, it's a powerful image.
Stunning! I believe you've taken a picture of this pathway before, right? Except it wasn't buried in snow at the time, if I remember correctly, which I might not.
