Massive summer swells along the Southern California coast brought out gawkers, surfers and hundreds of onlookers to view the powerful sets of waves pounding the beaches last night and throughout the day. All as a result of Hurricane Marie, off the coast of Baja. Film crews and the news media were on hand for eyewitness reports about flooding in the streets and homes on the beach. I heard that world class surfers converged to ride the 12-20-foot waves down in Newport Beach. They said the surf was so big, it reminded them of Hawaii. The waves had settled down by the time I got to the sand near sunset---they were only 6-8 feet high at that point.
@panthora The waves were powerful but not too high around sunset. But I just got back from the beach and now, they're about 10-12 feet. Too dark for photos though.
