Wildflower or weed? by rhoing

Wildflower or weed?

In a garden, perhaps the former.
In the yard, probably the latter.
This one is in our back yard, so eventually it’ll have to go!

It is “Lamium amplexicaule,” which is in the Mint family and has common names “Dead Nettle,” “Henbit Deadnettle” (USDA) and “Greater Henbit.”

Also, it’s edible: http://www.eattheweeds.com/henbit-top-of-the-pecking-order/

This image was taken for PhytoImages — http://phytoimages.siu.edu/imgs/paraman1/r/Lamiaceae_Lamium_amplexicaule_81484.html — with the following description: “Chasmogamous flowers (above) and cleistogamous flowers (below).” Sure; let’s go with that!

Aha! “Cleistogamy … describes the trait of certain plants to propagate by using non-opening, self-pollinating flowers” — http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleistogamy

Most of my last posted flowers have been weeds. Up close some of them are quite pretty just like yours! Lovely close up of this purple beauty.

Often 'weeds' are hardier and more beautiful than tame flowers.

they look like an exotic orchid.

Let me know what it is! We have LOTS of it here in Ga in our yard! Especially at the lakehouse, where we let the lawn get more grown up with "weeds." I love weeds. Most are so pretty!

@danette It *does* have a lot going on. Perhaps this is due in part to the two different kinds of flowers; read above!

It's such an interesting image because of all the structures and color.
