First day of classes + first Pondhawk this year

Today was the first day of fall classes! So while a former colleague was finishing up the 8 o’clock class I was scheduled to teach this semester (“Mathematical Economics”), I was hunting bugs and plants at the greenhouse! Ahhh, retirement! And tonight Clare & I are having dinner at Greg & Suzanne’s. This is new territory for us now that all 4 of us are retired!

This is a young male Eastern Pondhawk before it turns blue. (Females and young males of this species look like this. Adult males, however, are blue.)

Confirmed at BugGuide as a male “Erythemis simplicicollis,” or “Eastern Pondhawk”; http://bugguide.net/node/view/990706

It seems to be the season for dragonflies! Nice shot! And thanks for the website. I will probably use it too.
