Res Hall guardian

Today Clare & I helped our niece with “move-in” at her residence hall and this bird was just “hangin’ around.” I thought s/he must be injured because s/he didn’t fly away from the people, but as Clare & I returned to our car after the last load, the bird flew high into a tree.

Can anyone ID this bird?

It's a type of hawk but I don't know what kind. I'm sure someone else will know.
