Red Admiral by rhoing

Red Admiral

Most Red Admiral shots, including one of my posts — http://365project.org/rhoing/365/2013-06-30 — are of the more colorful upper-sides of their wings. This is a better shot of the underside of a hindwing in particular. As my NWF Field Guide indicates, “Below, … the hindwings are colored and patterned like tree bark” (p. 294). But the Field Guide doesn't mention the four dark hearts!

I was pleasantly surprised by the sharpness of the images from my point-and-shoot camera!

Confirmed at BAMONA as “Vanessa atalanta” or “Red Admiral”; http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/sighting_details/1055849

Fantastic details in the butterfly and it contrasts well with the green and pink.
