Nikon selfie in a dead Canon LCD panel…

I signed up for “365” 5½ years ago so that I would be self-induced to learn how to use my then-new and first dSLR. I have learned much about my dSLR and I have learned much about taking better photos. Whether it shows at all is, of course, a separate question. But my Canon — and the 18-55mm kit lens — have taken a beating.
» The LCD panel is scratched.
» The rubber eyepiece is long-gone.
» The rubber grip from the right side is also long-gone.
» The LCD panel doesn't come "on" now.
» The 18–55mm IS lens doesn't auto-focus

Tomorrow we leave for Ohio and a family reunion in Michigan and, alas, my point-and-shoot will have to be my main-and-only camera. But I think I'll take the Canon and kit lens and see if I can learn things that will help me decide whether to replace the whole thing or have things repaired. Stay tuned…

Do you know how many photos the Canon has taken? I would imagine several hundred if not several thousands in five and a half years. It has served you well!

@thewatersphotos Great question, Gary! I suspect it's "lots" of thousands: 15-to-20 thousand maybe? Since I'm more than a week behind in posting, I have already received estimates and the lens is being scrapped while the body is being repaired. I hope they don't reset *everything*. I know they recover and clear error codes, but I'll be a bit surprised if the frame count gets wiped.

Great to hear you can repair the body, as I'm sure you know this camera inside and out after so many years together.

That is a sad looking camera and your description reminds me of a much loved teddy bear!
