Kestrel by rosiekind

Kestrel

Not a particularly wonderful shot but I was pleased to get a pic of this kestrel. He was upsetting a magpie who flew swiftly away. I saw quite a few chases this afternoon as I saw a huge red kite going after some gulls. I've never seen anything like it before and I didn't know they went for such big birds. The red kite appeared to be huge with a fantastic wingspan and was really close. The thing that drew my attention to the sky was the gull shouting his head off and when I looked up, I could see why. However, the kite who was flying over and chasing the gulls mate flew over some trees. I could have cursed the trees for getting in the way as I pointed my camera at it. When I walked further along the cycle track though, looking through the fields I was dismayed to see that someone has trimmed a huge willow tree to within an inch of it's life! This is the tree that the green woodpecker likes to inhabit and it may spoil my chances of getting any pics of him as I didn't hear him today.
Still a super capture.

What is it with people and trees? At least willows like that sort of thing but there won't be any growth until spring for the birds.

Sounds like a wonderful spot for wildlife Rosie - apart from the willow being cut!! A little while back a huge tree that had been part of my local landscape for the whole of my life was cut down to make way for a supermarket! One day it was there, the next it was gone - I actually cried! : (
