Today on the second Saturday of the month it was the village market in our community. It's a really nice sociable occasion.
A great number of people attended this month’s market and Gordon Vowles led the one minute silence to remember those who had given their lives for us during the First and Second World War. The names of Willington’s villagers who had died in both wars was read out so that we could all remember the sacrifice they made. Sylvia Phipp representing the British Legion then read out the words from Lawrence Binyon’s poem for the Fallen.
The market is a great place to meet and have a chat especially at this time of the year when the nights are long and people do not get out of their houses to meet so often when the weather is cold and damp. The ladies served delicious cakes, bacon rolls and teas and coffees and these are probably the best value in Bedfordshire! There were also many nice raffle prizes. It's great to come along and meet your neighbours if you are new to the village as they will always be made to feel welcome.
The bacon roll in this shot looks very tasty but we had a piece of the lovely homemade cake in my Bits & Bobs Album.
Fave for the lovely sense of community that exists in our country villages & towns. This shot depicts the real feel you get at these occasions, nothing beats it. A bit of a scurry this morning at our village community centre which is right beside the war memorial, the burglar alarm started up at ten to eleven, somone managed to switch it off just in time!
This makes me think of the weekly summertime farmers market the town where my cousins live in Alberta have. It's held in their curling rink. When we visit there we always enjoy the camaraderie and the produce and goods sold.
