The Neptune Fountain was conceived as part of the overall design of the gardens and park commissioned by Maria Theresa in the 1770s. It was very probably designed by Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg.
Neptune driving across the seas in dominion over the watery element is a common motif in 16th to 18th-century art, being used as a symbol for monarchs controlling the destiny of their nations.
Even here in Malta there was a Neptune Fountain in the harbour area erected by the Knights of St John. However, the colonial government, for some reason, dismantled it and the bronze statue of Neptune was erected in a courtyard in the Governor’s Palace (previously the Grand Master’s palace). It can be seen from outside through one of the doors of the palace.
Thanks for the follow. I have been enjoying looking at your album. I think this is one of your best shots. Just an aside: My husband's grandfather was from Marsala, Sicily, but we do not know anything about our earlier ancestors.
