Posting early again today. Taking Michaela out for a picnic with her cousins. Will catch up on commenting later.
A few days ago we spent the day in Rabat and Mdina and I promised I would upload some of the many shots I took there.
On arrival we went to visit the Domus Romana, a museum of archeological finds at a place just outside Mdina.
Excavations in the area started in the early 20th century with a find of parts of an Islamic cemetery. When excavations continued another find was made at a lower layer. This comprised the remains of a Roman house (Domus Romana) which dated back to the 1st century AD. This is the mosaic floor of one of the rooms, still completely intact. It is made of very tiny chips of mosaic.
Thank you very much for looking and for your kind comments.
Beautiful composition Dione! What a great find . I love mosaics, it reminds me of the mosaics that we saw while cycling through Italy in Aquileia that were discovered while workman were digging to reinforce the bell tower.
The mosaic floors I saw in Israel and Greece from the same era were amazing- the mosaics in many cases were no larger than the nail on your pinky finger. Can you imagine the hours it took to not only cut them to the right size but to lay out the design and then cement them in place? Excellent capture Dione. This is a beautiful floor and quite amazing that they found it completely in tact still!
Great composition to show this magnificent floor - I know it's not easy to get such a good angle as you have here.
It's awe-inspiring to see a piece of history like this, isn't it?
I somehow missed this shot! Instant Fav! This is beautiful seen live, and you captured it beautifully! When I tried to capture this I didn't lik ethe result! :)
