West Coast Snoek Run by seacreature

West Coast Snoek Run

My photo buddy, Karen, took me to St Helena Bay today as I had never seen the Snoek Run before. I believe the snoek have been coming in for a week or 10 days already. I couldn't believe the hundreds of people waiting for the snoek boats to start arriving, the auctioning and selling the fish straight from the boat. The number of boats that kept coming in, one after the other until the paving ran red with blood from these magnificent fish. I felt like a hypocrite and a fraud because I'm a meat eater myself, but yet seeing the sheer volume of fish, the blood, the smell, the butchery, made me feel queasy and incredibly sad in the midst of the carnival atmosphere. The boats were still coming in, but I wanted to get away and not see any more. I feel so torn because I know the whole economy of the West Coast depends on the fish - when there's no fish the people have no money to spend in the hairdresser or clothing shop and everyone suffers. But yet it makes me sad too.
I can totally understand your conflict Desi - I feel the same. You’ve managed a great image for the day though.

Very thought provoking. Seeing it up close and in brutal clarity, I can understand how you feel.
I am a meat eater too but I wouldn’t even step on a beetle so get the hypocrisy thing.
