Sad Goodbyes and Pretty Goodbyes

Today, has been a bittersweet day for the O'Neill family.

Whilst watching television tonight, it was announced that the our local Heart Centre where Ben had his last surgery is to close, as is Leeds, where he had his first 2 major operations. We will still attend clinic there, but for future surgery we will be going somewhere else, Birmingham or London is our guess. This is the result of the Safe and Sustainable review.

We had become familiar with Leicester and their amazing surgery team, but if the result is better science, better surgery techniques and skill, well, maybe it is for the best, even though we will be much further from home. Thank you to everyone at Glenfield in Leicester, for their dedication and care when Ben had open heart surgery in January 2011, and in Leeds in 2000 and 2005. We will never forget what you did for our family. It is a Sad Goodbye.

The sweet moment of the day is when Sam's band, The Pretty Goodbyes, won a Battle of the Bands competition at school, Well done Sam, George, Spike and Jacob. A richly deserved triumph for you. We are very proud.

Wishing my American friends on and off 365 a peaceful and happy Independence Day. You've done alright since you went your own way in 1776.
Wow its incredible how they're trying to market cuts with this fancy brochure. A real shame for parents who will have to travel so far from home. boo.Congrats to your son though!

@fueast Thank you Alison. We understand the need for change and the improvements it should bring, but we are sad that the dedicated surgeons and nursing staff in Leeds and Leicester will have to relocate or lose their jobs. Sam has made us very proud, and the guy who is probably the most proud of him is Ben. I am blessed with 2 wonderful (if untidy) children.

Progress, you win some you lose some. We do get attached to buildings and hospital staff, just when all seems to work, change. He seems healthy now, He must be a fighter after going through so much.

Well lets hope it is for the best & an improvement, you have to look on the bright side until you know definitely but it is hard to lose familiar& comforting faces whom you trust. All the best for their new routine & congratulations to your son & his band "

I understand your sentimental feelings - I've gotten attached in the same way many times. Hopefully Sam's success helped eleviate some of the disappointment. Lol - I think we are doing ok too :) Thanks for the Independence Day wishes!!

Wow Sean, what an amazing young man Ben is to go through 3 lots of major surgery in such a small amount of time. Congratulations to your son Sam for his Battle of the Bands win too. Sounds like you have a musician and a fighter in your house, you must be very proud of them both.

Change is difficult, but I’m sure you’re going to be in good hands. Congrats to the Pretty Goodbyes. And thanks for the Independence Day wishes! Seems we Americans are still pretty fond of England despite our desire to be separate.
