Yesterday 22/11/2016 Terri @terrinorthwind posted a photo of a Barred Owl. This evening we were at our daughter's and we heard an unusual bird call. The bird was large and sitting in a tree across the street. It took off and flew towards us then it cut to the right and flew off. We think it might have been some kind of hawk.I started to turn and I looked up into a small sized (15 feet) dogwood tree right beside the garage and there sat a Barred Owl, about 15 feet away from me. I said, "Look at that." It was looking away from us. I took my phone out of my pocket and woke it up. The sound made the owl turn its head and look right at us. By the time I pushed the camera app icon it flew away. I missed the shot of a lifetime. An owl in the wild and if I had my camera I could have filled the frame using a 105mm setting. Our daughter looked out her kitchen window and there it was sitting in another tree. So I went outside walked around to the side of the house and it sat nicely for me. I wish I had my longer lens with me to have gotten in even closer.
Magnificent Skip! Fantastic shot, love the B&W! They are such gorgeous animals. I am thinking that your daughter has an owl for a neighbor, here is to more owl sightings! Wishing you a peace filled day.
@terrinorthwind@inthecloud5@milaniet _ Thank you very much! The reason we were at our daughter's is because she is moving tomorrow and we have been helping her move the small stuff. There is a small wooded area behind their house where they have enjoyed deer, squirrels, birds and now an owl. Hopefully they will see some of these beautiful creatures in their new home too.
I would love to capture an owl in camera. We do have them visit the woods behind us and one night we lured the Barred Owl in by using a call on the computer. But it was so late at night and I couldn't tell exactly where is was without a flashlight or setting off the flash and I knew that would drive it away. So I'll have to enjoy yours instead! fav
