This ice sculptor had been working on 4 sculptures. This was one of two swans. I had hoped that I could have gotten a better photo but people and helpers were all around him. In the back, you can see part of the largest sculpture he was working on.
Sculpting looks impossible to me; to look at a solid block of something as "see" a shape on the inside, and the chisel away to reach it. Amazing artistry.
@gardencat - Yes and no. While we watched he mostly worked on this particular one. One of his assitants was working on the larger one in the background using some sort of an electric tool making designs in the ice. I am thinking he would work on one piece until he got to a certaun point then move to another until they eventually were all finished.
@claudiet - He was pretty well protected. He was wearing a very heavy coat, hood, cap and heavy gloves. Since it was so cold he didn't have to worry about his ice melting that is for sure.
They are really fascinating to watch. I missed the ice sculpting contest they had here in town- didn't see the promos for it and I really wanted to go this year. Good shot!
