The Romans were the first people to find gold here and operated the mine for over a hundred years. Then, nearly 2000 years later the mine was opened up again in Victorian times. It eventually closed in 1937. The mine never produced a lot of gold so what there is is very expensive.
There are two guided tours, a Roman one and a Victorian one. We did both. The guides were both excellent and we learned a lot. Charlotte is very interested in history and found it all fascinating.
This is owned by the National Trust so of course there's a National Trust Tea Room.
