In olden times the village pond was multifunctional and a hub of activity. One of the things they were used for was cleaning cartwheels. This old pond has been constructed in a way which allows a horse drawn cart to reverse down a ramp into the water to have it's wheels cleaned. Clever!
I used to drive my ponies, so I know what this could have been prior to being able to hose the wheels clean. Thank you for this picture and explanation.
